The Mets are in desperate need of offensive help. As a result, they made a desperate move. On Sunday, the team called up veteran outfielder Tommy Pham as it looks to snap out of its recent struggles. The Mets have not yet officially announced the move. The Athletic’s Will Sammon was first to report the news.
Pham, 38, will be inserted into a Mets lineup that has been shut out in two of its last three games. The lineup has scored just nine runs over its last five games as well, in need of a spark. As a whole, the Mets have also dropped their last five games.
Just hours before first pitch on Opening Day, the Mets signed Pham to a minor league deal. Pham, who played for the Mets in 2023, batted .268 with 10 home runs. He was one of the few bright spots on a disappointing team.
A 12-year veteran, Pham owns a career slash line of .256/.344/.422 with 149 home runs, 522 RBIs, and a .766 OPS across 1,241 games.
In 2025, the 38-year-old appeared in 120 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates, batting .245 with 10 home runs, 52 RBIs, and a .330 on-base percentage.
The outfielder will join a Mets team that currently has six players capable of playing the outfield: Tyrone Taylor, Luis Robert Jr., Carson Benge, Brett Baty, and Jared Young. With superstar Juan Soto sidelined due to injury, the Mets have already begun to feel the effects of his absence.
Pham has played for 10 teams in his career, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals, and Pirates.
Because he signed late, Pham was forced to remain in Port St. Lucie at the club’s spring training complex before joining a minor league affiliate.
Pham was later assigned to Low-A St. Lucie for a rehab stint. He recorded two hits in 10 at-bats with three walks and an RBI. He initially believed he would be heading to Triple-A Syracuse. With the Mets struggling the way they are. Pham learned he would instead travel to Los Angeles to join the Mets.
With the Mets, Pham will likely serve as a designated hitter. At times, he could also be asked to play both corner outfield spots.
