Mets Considering Calling Up Top Prospect Jonah Tong

Tong has spent much of this season in Triple-A Syracuse, logging a 5-6 record in 23 starts, with a 4.54 ERA, 126 strikeouts and a 1.37 WHIP in 107 innings pitched. Despite mixed results in Triple-A this season, Tong has strung together some encouraging starts as of late, allowing just two earned runs with a 23/10 K/BB ratio over his last 21.1 innings of work since August 11.

The 23-year-old also took a no-hitter into the seventh inning during his last start against the Triple-A Lehigh High Valley IronPigs on August 29.

Tong has had a cup of coffee in the big leagues this season with the Mets, posting a 1-1 record in three outings with a 3.60 ERA, seven punchouts and a 1.50 WHIP across 10 innings of work. He was used as a bulk pitcher in these three outings, as opposed to serving as a starter.

The righty hurler, though, was hit extremely hard when the Amazins’ called him up towards the end of last season to make his major league debut. In five starts during the 2025 campaign, Tong posted a 7.71 ERA (16 earned runs) with 22 strikeouts and nine walks in just 18.2 innings.

If the Mets do opt to call up Tong next week, it is most likely to see if the young right-hander has shown some improvement and can remain in the big leagues for the long-term to play a part in the club’s rotation plans in 2027.

The Mets already have three young promising starting pitchers in Nolan McLean, Zac Thornton and Christian Scott, who are expected to anchor the rotation next year. Tong will now try to join that young trio.
