The New York Mets optioned right-hander Tobias Myers to Triple-A Syracuse and recalled left-hander Zach Thornton following their recent loss to the Boston Red Sox.
Myers has been one of the most-moved players on the roster this season, shuttling between the big leagues and Triple-A multiple times as he has struggled to find consistency. Thornton gives the Mets a fresh left-handed arm and could factor into the rotation as the club navigates the final stretch before the All-Star break.
The moves reflect the broader reality of a Mets season that has gone sideways. New York sits at 40-56 and fifth in the NL East, roughly 15 games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves, with playoff odds that have all but disappeared heading into the break.

Myers, 27, was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in the Freddy Peralta trade this offseason. He has posted a 6.21 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 42 innings in 2026, and the constant movement between levels has done little to help him find his footing.
Thornton, 24, made his MLB debut on May 20 against the Washington Nationals and was ranked the organization's No. 13 prospect by MLB Pipeline at the time of his call-up. He was drafted by the Mets in the fifth round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Grand Canyon University and recently allowed just one run over six innings with seven strikeouts in his most impressive big-league outing.
The Red Sox series exposed recurring issues with command and early exits that taxed the bullpen. Juan Soto, batting .295 with 20-plus home runs and an elite OPS, remains the lone consistent contributor on a team that has failed to compete despite significant roster investment.
The Mets enter the All-Star break with little to play for beyond development and trade deadline positioning. Thornton's recall gives the rotation a left-handed option, while Myers works through his issues in Syracuse.
