Mets have made a decision about David Peterson

The New York Mets were one of the biggest losers of the early stages of the Winter Meetings.

Losing star closer Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers over a reported $3M discrepancy was a big blow. Also, their reluctance to make Pete Alonso a long-term offer could cost them their star first baseman.

President of baseball operations David Stearns will have to work around the clock to fix this team, and according to Tim Britton of The Athletic, that might include moving David Peterson.

The Mets could trade David Peterson

"The Mets are open to moving the 2025 All-Star if they could find the right fit in a need-for-need type trade, similar to the one they made earlier this winter in swapping Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien," Britton wrote.

Peterson, like his club, struggled with inconsistency in the second half of the campaign, posting an 8.83 ERA in his final eight starts.

However, he's been a serviceable starter for the most part. He's logged a 3.67 ERA over 51 starts and just under 300 innings since his hip surgery after the 2023 season.

The Mets are going to need bats, and a reliable southpaw starter like Peterson should help them get that. They have more than enough depth in the starting rotation, so they're one of the few teams that could afford to part ways with a player of his caliber.

Also, he's entering the final season of club control, and while money shouldn't be an issue for Steve Cohen, he's projected to make close to $8 million in arbitration.
