The New York Mets almost snapped their losing streak on Sunday. Instead, they lost to the Chicago Cubs in extra innings by a final score of 2-1. It has been a miserable start to the season for the Mets, who have now dropped 11 consecutive games and are 7-15 overall in 2026. According to Bob Nightengale, the Mets have not endured a losing streak this bad since the 2002 MLB season.

"The New York Mets' ugliness continues, this time in a painful 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Cubs with a blown save by Devin Williams in the 9th and a loss by reliever Craig Kimbrel in the 10th. They have lost 11 games in a row. The last time they had a longer losing streak was 2002," Nightengale shared.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Nico Hoerner came through with a sacrifice fly to drive in Pete Crow-Armstrong from third base. Hoerner's swing came off a pitch from Craig Kimbrel.

New York held the lead heading into the ninth inning before the Cubs tied the game at 1-1. Closer Devin Williams had a blown save after surrendering the ninth inning run.

The Mets have not played good baseball in recent action to say the least. They were close to getting the job done on Sunday, but the ball club ultimately came up short. New York's pitching had a respectable performance overall despite the late inning runs. The Mets' offense continued to struggle, however.

Mets' Offense Continues to Struggle

New York had six total hits on Sunday. Marcus Semien recorded two hits, while no other batter had a multi-hit game. Overall, New York is 29th in runs scored with a mark of 72. The Mets are also 29th in OPS at .624.

Many star players are struggling at the moment. Francisco Lindor is hitting just .205 with a .600 OPS, while Bo Bichette has recorded a .217 batting average and .538 OPS. The only player who has more than two home runs on the team is Francisco Alvarez, who has hit four long balls. Luis Robert and Mark Vientos both have two home runs, while no other player has more than one.

The Mets' pitching has endured its ups and downs, but it has been a dreadful start to the 2026 season for the lineup. New York will look to end its losing streak on Tuesday at home against the Minnesota Twins.
