The New York Mets have agreed to a two-year, $11.5 million contract extension with catcher Luis Torrens. The contract extension keeps Torrens with the Mets through the 2028 MLB season.

The decision comes after Torrens was set to be a free agent at the conclusion of the 2026 MLB season. The Mets, however, have decided to keep the backup catcher in Queens a bit longer.

Torrens will receive $.75 million for the 2027 and 2028 MLB season. His extension also includes $2 million incentives.

Torrens has been productive as a backup for the Mets ever since he arrived to the team in 2024. He signed for the Mets after the team acquired him from the New York Yankees in exchange for cash consideration.

Torrens has played 13 games this season and is hitting a .226 batting average. His statistics include 6 hits and 4 RBIs.

The Venezuelan pitcher made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres back in 2017. Torrens would be optioned to the Double-A Texas League for the entire 2018 season after dealing with an oblique injury during spring training.

Torrens would play a few more years in San Diego before being traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2020. He'd continue to play for multiple teams until he made his way to the Mets in mid-2024.

Torrens has played 152 games for the Mets since signing with the team, including two playoff games and one plate appearance during the 2024 MLB playoffs. With the Mets, Torrens has recorded a .225 batting average, including eight home runs and 48 RBIs.

In 2025, Torrens was named a Golden Glove finalist, demonstrating his importance for the team despite only being a backup. With the Mets looking to improve after a disastrous start to the 2026 MLB season, the team's decision to extend Torrens' contract shows that they believe that he can be of service to the team in any capacity.

The Mets currently sit in last place in the NL East and hold the worst record across the league. This stems from the team suffering a 12-game losing streak, something the Mets hadn't accomplished since the 2002 MLB season.

With the season looking gloomy for the Mets, extending Torrens' contract is a safe play for the team, as they see the importance of his worth in the long run. In his career, Torrens has hit 27 homers and 127 RBIs and is a valuable asset to the team.
