The New York Mets are 10-21 over a month into the 2026 MLB season and sitting in fifth place in the National League East. Their biggest low point so far was a 12-game losing streak, stretching from April 8 to 21.

While the team has several areas of concern, the offense is among the most notable. Through 31 games, they have accumulated just 235 hits, 24 home runs, 106 runs scored, 355 total bases and a team OPS of .631.

New York's offensive struggles can also be due to a handful of injuries. Both shortstop Francisco Lindor and first baseman Jorge Polanco sit on the 10-day IL, while outfielder Juan Soto missed 15 games in April due to a right calf strain.

While trending toward missing the postseason for the second straight year, New York is in need of reinforcements. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller predicts the Mets will make a "godfather offer" for Chicago White Sox first baseman Munetaka Murakami at the trade deadline.

"First base certainly isn't the Mets' only problem, but it is one they might be able to resolve in a big way by offering Chicago a package headlined by their top pitching prospect, Jonah Tong," Miller wrote. "Even if New York is still nowhere close to contention by early August, it might swing big for Murakami for 2027 purposes, especially considering the upcoming class of free agents is painfully light on first basemen."

The 26-year-old rookie has exploded onto the scene after spending eight seasons in the NPB. In 31 games, he's accumulated 110 at-bats, 26 hits, 22 runs scored, 12 home runs, 23 RBIs and 25 walks. The lefty is also slashing .236/.375/.564 with a .939 OPS.

He could replace Mark Vientos, who has gotten the most time at first base this season for the Mets, but is sporting just a .644 OPS. While the Mets haven't shied away from taking on big contracts in the past, that wouldn't be necessary for Murakami.

The first baseman is in the first season of a two-year, $34 million contract. If the Mets were to acquire him and things didn't work out, he is set to hit free agency after the 2027 season.

However, sending Tong away could be a move they regret. The starting pitcher is the Mets' No. 2 prospect, according to MLB.com. With the trade deadline not until Aug. 3, there's still plenty of time for New York to weigh its options.
