The New York Mets finally got some good news regarding star shortstop Francisco Lindor.

Prior to the Mets' game against the Cincinnati Reds , manager Carlos Mendoza provided a series of updates on New York's injured players. The most notable was Lindor, who had been out since April 22 with a left calf strain.

"Let's start with Lindor. He started running and doing baseball activities," Mendoza said to the media. "He's hitting in the cages, gonna take ground balls, so now we get to that phase where there's baseball involved."

Lindor, 32, had gotten off to another slow start to the season, a trend throughout his tenure with the Mets. In this case, he slashed .226/.314/.355 with two home runs, just five RBI, and a 96 wRC+. However, it is worth mentioning that Lindor was dealing with the lingering effects of a fractured hamate bone, undergoing surgery during spring training and returning just in time for Opening Day.

Before leaving the Mets' April 22 game against the Minnesota Twins with the calf strain, Lindor was starting to heat up at the plate. He hit .333 with a .545 slugging percentage over his last 34 plate appearances, including a three-run home run in New York's previous game.

The Mets' lineup was already struggling greatly prior to Lindor going down, and the injury to their star shortstop made things even worse. From April 22 to May 25, New York's offense has collectively hit .230/.300/.362, and its 91 wRC+ ranks as the seventh-worst in MLB over that span. As a result of this lack of production, the Mets currently sit in last place in the NL East with a 22-31 record.

Lindor returning to the lineup certainly won't fix everything, but it will be a much-needed boost to the languishing offense. Nonetheless, there is still no timetable on Lindor returning, so the Mets still need to find a way to right the ship before it's too late.

Other Injury Updates from Carlos Mendoza

The update on Lindor wasn't the only one from Mendoza, as he also provided the status of catcher Francisco Alvarez, utility player Jared Young, infielder Jorge Polanco, and pitchers A.J. Minter and Kodai Senga.

Alvarez, who tore his right meniscus on May 12, is already resuming baseball activities and hitting in the cages. According to Mendoza, the Mets' backstop could be on track to beat his eight-week timetable.

Young, who also tore his meniscus, will likely be activated from the injured list on Tuesday. As for the pitchers, Senga (lumbar spine inflammation) is expected to make a rehab start on Thursday and Minter (torn lat) will be activated on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Finally, Polanco could potentially begin a rehab assignment this week. The 32-year-old infielder has played in just 14 games (12 as a designated hitter) due to Achilles and wrist issues.
