After the collapse at the end of the 2025 season, an offseason of change swept through the New York Mets organization. A whole new coaching staff was installed under manager Carlos Mendoza, while president of baseball operations David Stearns overturned the roster. One of the biggest moves he made was the trade for Milwaukee Brewers pitchers Freddy Peralta and Tobias Myers. After losing their eighth game out of their last nine, the Mets have made yet another roster move. Per the organization’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, Myers was sent down to Triple-A Syracuse, with Joey Gerber called up to replace him.

“RHP Joey Gerber has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse,” posted the team’s official page Monday. “RHP Tobias Myers was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse following yesterday’s game.”
While Peralta was acquired to lead the Mets’ rotation, Myers also came along as much-needed depth. New York’s starting rotation has been hammered by injuries and ineffectiveness. Peralta hasn’t been the difference-maker he was in Milwaukee. Top prospect Jonah Tong has dealt with some inconsistency, while Kodai Senga’s struggles have put him in the bullpen.
After applying his trade as both a starter and reliever with the Brewers, Myers has pitched almost exclusively out of the Mets’ bullpen as a long reliever. The 27-year-old has undergone a rocky transition, as his 6.21 ERA over 42 innings is certainly not what Stearns had in mind for Myers. Now, as New York’s nightmare 2026 campaign continues, perhaps Gerber can provide a bigger impact than Myers has. If not, it could be an even longer season at Citi Field for one of baseball’s most disappointing squads.
