Mets star 1B Pete Alonso OK after terrifying car crash

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was very happy to be in the middle of a media scrum on Monday after being in a car crash over the weekend that resulted in his vehicle flipping over multiple times.

"Yesterday I got in a really, kinda brutal car accident," Alonso said Monday from spring training in Port St. Lucie, Florida. "This is a really special spring training because yesterday was a really close experience to death."

Alonso, 27, said he was driving to the spring training facility when a truck ran a red light and T-boned his car. He was the only one in the vehicle when the incident occurred.

"One (moment) I was coming here to work, coming to spring training, and next thing I know I'm kicking my windshield in trying to get out of a flipped-over car," Alonso recounted. "Just really blessed to be here. Thankful nothing is wrong. Also thank you Ford for having great engineering."

The two-time Home Run Derby winner led the Mets offense last season slashing .262/.344/.519 with 37 home runs and 94 RBI on 147 hits.
