Mexico cancels baseball season, Mexico City Marathon due to pandemic

One day after the coronavirus pandemic forced Minor League Baseball to cancel its season, the Mexican Baseball League made the same call.

Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN) and Reuters (h/t Eurosport), the Mexican Baseball League called off its season for the first time in 95 years because of the uncontrolled virus outbreak that, per Reuters, has left nearly 30,000 people in the country dead.

Like American minor league teams, Mexican Baseball League clubs earn the majority of their revenues from gate sales and in-person purchases. Sporting events throughout Mexico currently can only occur behind closed doors and without spectators.

The season was scheduled to start Aug. 7.

Additionally, the 2020 Mexico City Marathon announced that the race scheduled for Aug. 30 is canceled. According to Mexico News Daily, the event drew roughly 30,000 runners last year.

The Haspa Marathon Hamburg is scheduled to take place in the German city on Sept. 13.
