The Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers faced off at Camelback Ranch on Friday for a Spring Training contest. Walking off the Angels for a 6-5 victory, the Dodgers were aided by the spring debut of Shohei Ohtani.
Leading off for manager Dave Roberts, Ohtani hit a solo home run in his first at-bat of the spring. With the Angels having split-squad action on Friday, star outfielder Mike Trout was in the lineup for their contest against the Chicago White Sox, depriving fans of a matchup featuring both he and Ohtani.
Teammates in Anaheim for six seasons, Trout and Ohtani were one of the most talented duos in MLB history.
Signing a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers in 2023, Ohtani left Anaheim for a new opportunity in the National League. Inventing the 50/50 club in his first season with the Dodgers, Ohtani helped lead them to a World Series championship.
Speaking with Greg Amsinger of MLB Network, Trout was asked if watching his former teammate make history en route to a World Series title adds more incentive to bring the Angels back to the playoffs.
"Oh yeah," Trout admitted. "Anytime you see a guy leave and win a World Series it's tough to see."
While Trout admitted it was tough seeing Ohtani leave Anaheim and win a World Series the next season, he also spoke highly of his former teammate.
"But I'm happy for him," Trout said. "What he's done for the game has been incredible. He's fun to watch, you can't argue that."
