Milwaukee Brewers: Andrew Vaughn and Brandon Woodruff Make History in Game 2 vs Nationals

The Milwaukee Brewers currently lead the Washington Nationals by the score of 3-2 in the second game of their weekend series. Milwaukee won the first game 8-3 on the back of solid pitching from DL Hall and Quinn Priester, as well as a six-run third inning that included a two-run home run from Christian Yelich.

So far, the game on Saturday has been dominated by two pitchers that both made comebacks from significant injuries. Shinnosuke Ogasawara of the Nationals missed time earlier this year with an oblique injury, and has struggled to find consistency since his return.

Brandon Woodruff of the Brewers, of course, missed nearly two full years with a shoulder injury, and then several freak setbacks on his rehab assignment.

It also has seen recently acquired first baseman Andrew Vaughn continue one of the best stories in all baseball.

While Woodruff did not make it out of the fifth inning, he still had a pretty good outing in his second start since returning from his injury. He gave up two solo home runs, yes, but the two-time All-Star also struck out ten batters and did not issue a single walk.

It was his 20th career 10-strikeout game, which ranks second in Milwaukee’s franchise history (behind 23 from Corbin Burnes).

Woodruff also recorded his 800th career strikeout in the game.

Additionally, it is worth noting that, since the two-time All-Star got hurt, all Brewers pitchers combined had just one game with 10+ strikeouts and no walks. Woodruff did it in his second start back.

With Milwaukee trailing 2-1 in the fourth inning, Vaughn, who had been acquired earlier in the season in the trade that sent Aaron Civale to the Chicago White Sox, hammered a two-out two-RBI double down the left field line.

He is the first player in franchise history to record at least one RBI in each of his first five games with the team.
