Milwaukee Brewers: Blake Perkins Reacts to Game-Saving Throw, Becomes Only Player in 40 Years with This Feat

The Milwaukee Brewers are playing the best baseball in MLB right now, are 71-44, and have a five-game lead over the Chicago Cubs for first place in the National League Central Division. Including their 3-2 victory over the New York Mets last night, Milwaukee has won 11 of its last 15 games and is currently on a seven-game win streak.

And they are finding ways to win by playing mistake-free baseball while jumping on the mistakes their opponents make.

In their win over New York on Friday night, for example, the Brewers found themselves trailing 2-0 after two early solo home runs off of starter Brandon Woodruff. In the bottom of the fifth inning, though, they were able to plate three runs even though they had just one hit in the inning.

Blake Perkins reached on an error, and then Brice Turang hit a two-run home run to tie the game. Then, after two walks and Sal Frelick reaching on catcher’s interference, Isaac Collins drove in the go-ahead run by being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Despite allowing two solo home runs early, Woodruff settled down quite nicely, allowing just three base runners for the remainder of his outing. He finished his night with seven innings pitched, two earned runs, three hits and two walks allowed, and eight strikeouts. It was the first time he pitched seven innings since he threw a complete game shutout on September 11, 2023.

Abner Uribe allowed a walk in an otherwise dominant eighth inning, but All-Star closer Trevor Megill ran into some trouble in the ninth.

After getting the first two outs quickly, Megill gave up a double to Starlin Marte, and then a single to Jeff McNeil. As Marte raced home for what would have been the game-tying run, Perkins threw a dart from centerfielder to catcher William Contreras, who applied the tag for the third and final out of the game.

Last year, Perkins did the same thing in a game since the Cincinnati Reds. According to reports, he is the only MLB player in the last 40 years to have two game-winning outfield assists cutting down the tying run at the plate:

Perkins was 1-4 from the plate on Friday with a run scored, but his outfield assist to end the game was, by far, his biggest play of the night. After the game, he spoke with reporters about his heroics:

“I don’t know if you guys saw me after, but I was screaming pretty loud. I don’t usually do that. I was pretty fired up, man. What an exciting game!

“Super competitive. Obviously, we have some history with these guys and it feels incredible to come through right there.”

Perkins also credited Contreras for making the play at the plate following his throw.

The Mets, of course, eliminated the Brewers from the postseason last year in heartbreaking fashion, which is what Perkins is referring to when he mentioned Milwaukee’s history with New York.

Game Two is Saturday at 6:15 at American Family Field. Tobias Myers will be making the start for the Brewers in place of the injured Logan Henderson.
