Milwaukee Brewers Farm System: Top 3 Shortstop Prospects for the Future

In the wake of Willy Adames’ free agency departure, the Joey Ortiz experiment at shortstop has been a disaster for the Milwaukee Brewers. In recent days, Ortiz has finally shown a glimpse of life at the plate, going three for seven with four walks. On the season, though, he is hitting .186 with a .514 OPS and has cost the Brewers four runs in the field. All of this adds up to -1.0 Wins Above Replacement, a year after he amassed a 2.6 WAR playing primarily third base.

Unless something changes dramatically – and we’re now 61 games in – Ortiz does not look like a long-term answer at short. With this development in mind, here’s a look at several Brewers prospects who could take over in the future.

Crown Jewel Might Also Be Farthest Away

The good news is that the Brewers have several highly-esteemed candidates at the position. Of their top 10 prospects according to MLB.com , three are shortstops: 1. Jesus Made, 3. Cooper Pratt, and 9. Luis Pena, who also plays third. The bad news is that all three are rather far away from making a major league debut.

Made, who like Pena has seen reps at the hot corner, is the gem of the Brewers’ organization. Only 18 years old, however, he is not projected to debut until 2028.

After torching the Dominican Summer League in 2024, the switch-hitter has impressed at A-ball this season as well, slashing .280/.394/.422, with four homeruns, 27 RBIs and 21 steals. Unless something goes very wrong, Made should be an infield fixture for the Brewers at some point down the road.

Made, Pena and Pratt Form an Impressive Reservoir of Future Milwaukee Brewers Talent

Like Made, Pena, also 18 and on pace for a 2028 debut, wrecked the DSL last season and is performing quite well – even better than Made – on the Single-A Carolina roster. Playing a mix of short and third, Pena has racked up a .970 OPS in 30 games, homering five times, driving in 28 and stealing 22 bases. If he and Made ascend the ranks at a similar pace, one, most likely Pena, will have to shift to third base full-time.

In contrast to Made’s more balanced profile, Pena’s prospect grade is boosted by an elite speed score of 70. In hit tool, power and arm strength, Made has the advantage, edging out Pena 55 to 50 in overall grade.

Pratt, the most mundane member of the trio, is likely the one fans will see first on a major league diamond. In his third minor league season, the 20-year-old has struggled to navigate his promotion to Double-A. Through 46 games of action, he is batting only .229, good for a .664 OPS.

Compared to Made and Pena, he has less power upside. Last season, in time at both Carolina and High-A Wisconsin, Pratt mustered just eight homeruns in 347 at bats. In his minor league career, he is slugging .392.

He does boast a superior fielding grade, receiving a score of 55 to the others’ 50, but lacks franchise centerpiece appeal. Nonetheless, expected to debut a year earlier, he could have the first shot at showing his major league mettle.

Whoever that proves to be, though, the moment still several years off. For now, fans will just have to hope that Ortiz gets his act together.
