After losing four games in a row, the Milwaukee Brewers needed two things. First, they needed their offense to snap out of its funk and put runs on the board early and often. Second, they needed a strong performance from their starting pitcher. They got both in their 7-1 win against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
Now, Milwaukee travels to Chicago to face the White Sox, where a sweep of their southside rivals would result in a .500 road trip despite brutal series against the San Francisco Giants and division foe Cardinals.
Milwaukee’s offense, which had struggled to plate runs since they started their road trip, put up three runs in the first inning thanks to a couple of walks and several singles.
They scored four more runs in the fourth inning, all coming on RBI singles as well. The only time St. Louis scored was in the bottom of the fifth inning.
From top to bottom, the Brewers lineup came through with strong performances with each batter getting at least one hit on Sunday:
Jose Quintana, who was signed late in spring training and, therefore, had a delayed start to his season, did not have his best stuff on Sunday. However, he was able to limit Cardinals hitters to just one run in five innings pitched. The lefty hurler allowed five hits and three walks while striking out six (all looking).
With the win, Quintana became just the third pitcher in franchise history to win his first four starts with the team, joining Tom Candiotti in 1983 and CC Sabathia in 2008.
When told that he had matched a mark last reached by Sabathia, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer, Quintana could not hold back a massive grin:

“Oh wow! Oh my God! Hearing his name, I mean, he is a Hall of Fame pitcher,” Quintana said. “He’s great, he’s great. And I’m really glad, you know, to be in the same position as him. He was one of the best lefty pitchers in the game.
“I followed him a lot. I pitched against him a couple times when I was so young and he was so old,” he finished laughing.
If Quintana is able to win his next start, he will become the first Brewers pitcher to win his first five starts with the team.
