Mention the name Mark Attanasio to any Milwaukee Brewers fan right now, and one is not likely to get a very good reaction. On Monday, in their home opener, the Brewers lost their fourth game in a row to start the season by a score of 11-1 against the Kansas City Royals.

Last season, Milwaukee was the only team in Major League Baseball that did not suffer a four-game losing streak. Now they are 0-4 to start the 2025 MLB season.

Many fans, as they do whenever the Brewers lose or are eliminated from the postseason, blame Attanasio for not spending much money in free agency. This is especially true, from a fan’s perspective, in regard to pitching. Currently, Milwaukee only has two healthy starting pitchers.

And they will not go out and get anyone else.

Milwaukee Brewers Owner Mark Attanasio Will Not Spend More Than the Team Makes

Part of the frustration for Brewers fans is that, year after year, they see players sign with other teams for money that they feel Milwaukee could afford. What is more, it has become somewhat of a tradition for Brewers fans to expect their favorite players to be traded before they hit free agency.

But that is all part of Attanasio’s business plan for the Brewers. As the smallest market in baseball, Milwaukee simply does not have the resources to compete financially with other teams.

That being said, they still can compete on the field.

In a recent interview with Forbes, Attanasio said:

“We manage our payrolls to our revenues. Some of the other teams in the league have benefited from, generally, a media differential. I am always hesitant to speak on it, because it sounds like I’m making excuses here, and I don’t want to make excuses.

“Even in the biggest of markets, when teams overspend to try to win, then they then generally have to take a step back. Our strategy is to not ever have to take a step back and for the way we’re running things now we, we don’t have to.

“Even the teams that are rebuilding, they went hard to win, and now they’re, in most cases, rebuilding in a way that’s intelligent – quite intelligent,” he said. “I think that we would be better as a sport if every fan in every city felt that they could compete every year. But I can say in this city, we’re going to compete every year.”

And while Milwaukee has not advanced past the opening round of the playoffs since 2018, it is hard to deny the fact that this era of Brewers baseball is the most consistently successful one in franchise history, and Attanasio is at the helm of it.

Prior to him buying the Brewers in 2005, Milwaukee had made the postseason twice. Since he purchased the team, they have gone to the playoffs eight times, and six times in the past seven years.

Milwaukee Brewers Owner Mark Attanasio Does Not Want to Be the Next Commissioner of Baseball

Recently, it was rumored that several MLB owners plan on nominating Attanasio to be the next commissioner of baseball once Rob Manfred retires in 2029.

It is a job that the Brewers owner does not want.

“I got a number of people who sent me that tweet from Bob Nightengale, and I was tempted to call Bob and say, ‘Well, who’s telling you this?’” Attanasio told Forbes. “Because I haven’t had any conversations of the sort.”

Many forget that several owners wanted Attanasio to interview for the job in 2015. He did not want the job then because, as the interviewers noted, he would have to sell the Brewers.

And he does not want to do that.

For better or worse, Brewers fans, the owner is sticking around.
