Ozzie Guillen could not hold back his emotions on live TV this MLB week. The former Chicago White Sox shortstop and manager broke down after learning the team will retire his No. 13 jersey.
Guillen worked as an analyst during a game against the Toronto Blue Jays when the moment unfolded. The broadcast cut to the studio, where he sat with host Chuck Garfien. What started as a routine segment turned into something deeply personal.
The surprise came during the third inning. Former teammate Scott Podsednik joined the segment and made the announcement on behalf of the team. At first, Guillen joked that it might be about a bobblehead giveaway. Then Podsednik told him the real reason.
Podsednik said, “The Chicago White Sox announce today that 2005 World Series-winning manager Ozzie Guillen will be honored on Saturday August 8.” He then added that the team would retire Guillen’s No. 13 jersey.
The studio crowd cheered loudly. Guillen stood still for a moment, then wiped tears from his eyes. He got up and hugged Podsednik as it all sank in.

Podsednik reminded everyone of Guillen’s long time with the team. He played 13 seasons as a shortstop and later managed the team from 2004 to 2011. He also led them to a World Series win in 2005.
Guillen tried to find words but struggled. “I don’t know how to react, how to say thank you to the White Sox organization,” he said. “Wow, what can I say? The only thing I can say is thank you.”
His wife, Ibis Guillen, then joined him on set. They hugged while fans in the background chanted his name.
According to MLB.com, team chairman Jerry Reinsdorf pushed for the honor earlier this year. He gave one clear instruction to team executives. He wanted the announcement to remain a complete surprise.
Guillen will now become the 13th person in team history to have his number retired. He is also the first manager to get this honor from the team.
The moment showed how much the game and the team still mean to him.
