The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies have two of the highest payrolls in the MLB this season. Yet both teams made a horrendous start to the 2026 campaign. The Phillies dismissed manager Rob Thomson earlier this week. Meanwhile, Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza faces a big uphill challenge to keep hold of his job.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies will make some trade moves in a bid to resurrect their respective campaigns. He strongly believes the Mets will add a high-profile slugger to bolster their offense. Moreover, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski also indicated that early-season deals are in the works.

“I will say this about the Mets—I do believe they’re in the market for a thumper,” Heyman said for Bleacher Report. “If there is a big bat out there, I know there are a lot of teams struggling right now. Dave Dobrowski said we may have more early trades.”

The Mets are currently the worst team in the MLB with a 10-20 record. At 10-19, the Phillies are only 0.5 games ahead of them in the National League East.

“They Don’t Have A First Baseman” – Jon Heyman on Mets’ Needs

MLB insider Jon Heyman believes the New York Mets are scouting for a first baseman, as they did not have a specialist in that position on their Opening Day roster. He feels the Mets are desperately missing Pete Alonso in the lineup and need someone with a similar offensive profile.

“Let’s face it, they need a big bat to play first base,” Heyman said. “They don’t have a first baseman. We can regret all we want about Pete Alonso. He’s not even off to a good start.

“But that’s the kind of player that they need right now. And that’s what they will be looking for.”

Alonso opted out of his contract with the Mets in the offseason to become a free agent once again. He eventually signed a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles.
