The Miami Marlins have made a surprisingly encouraging start to the 2026 campaign. But it still remains to be seen whether they can sustain it to battle for a playoff spot. Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres are among the best teams in the MLB at the end of April. Despite taking a few blips of late, the Padres should earn a postseason berth in October.
Sandy Alcantara is enjoying an excellent season for the Miami Marlins thus far. He was one of the foremost trade candidates last year after returning from Tommy John surgery. Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report identifies the San Diego Padres as the strongest suitor for the 2022 National League Cy Young winner at the trade deadline later this year.
“Maybe he pitches so well for the next three months that Miami winds up hanging around as a contender,” Keller wrote. “If the Miami Marlins fall by the wayside as expected, though, it’s less a question of “if” Alcantara gets traded and more a question of “where.”

“Surely, there will be no shortage of interested parties, but look for San Diego’s A.J. Preller to work his deadline magic once again.”
Alcantara currently has a 3-2 record for the season with a 3.04 ERA despite having the lowest strikeout rate of his career. Still, he leads the MLB with 47.1 innings from seven starts, including one complete-game shutout.
The San Diego Padres are regarded as having a weak farm system at present. They shipped away most of their prized prospects in recent years. Yet MLB analyst Kerry Miller believes the Miami Marlins could still make a deal with them for a haul of prospects in return for Sandy Alcantara.
“But who loves trading one MLB player for three or four prospects more than the Marlins do?” Miller stated. “In 2024 alone, they did it with Luis Arraez, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Tanner Scott, and Jake Burger. At last year’s deadline, they did it with Jesús Sánchez. This past winter, they turned Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers into seven prospects.”
Alcantara has a $17 million salary for his final season with the Miami Marlins. The 30-year-old has a $21 million club option and a $2 million buyout. He will receive an extra $1 million if he is moved, but there are no restrictive clauses on his contract.
