After DFAing multiple former All-Star pitchers during the month of August, the Washington Nationals have added to their pitching staff by claiming former Toronto Blue Jays knuckleball pitcher Matt Waldron off waivers.
Nationals reporter Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic reports that Washington claimed Waldron off waivers. To make room, the Nationals placed pitching prospect Connelly Early on the 60-day injured list.
“The Nationals have claimed knuckleball pitcher Matt Waldron off of waivers,” Nusbaum wrote. “This season: 7.54 ERA in the majors, 1.33 ERA in the minors. Connelly Early was transferred to the 60-day IL.”
Waldron brings an unusual option to Washington’s pitching staff with his knuckleball. When effective, this pitch is tough for hitters to handle, making him a unique addition to a team looking for more depth. However, Waldron has struggled in the majors this season, posting a 7.54 ERA. His performance in the minors has been much better, with a 1.33 ERA.
This big difference in performance may be why the Nationals are giving Waldron a chance. They hope he can return to his minor league form and become a valuable option in the majors.
Waldron also played for the San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays. Earlier this month, Toronto claimed him off waivers from San Diego, but soon after, the team designated him for assignment.
Now, Waldron gets another chance with Washington.
The Nationals are motivated to try out different pitchers as they build for the future. Waldron’s experience and unique knuckleball could make him a player to watch for the rest of the season. Although his 7.54 ERA is a concern, his 1.33 ERA in the minors gives Washington some hope. The Nationals will see if he can bring that success to the majors. For Waldron, this move is another chance to prove he can be an effective major league pitcher.
