The Washington Nationals have surprised many with their offense, leading Major League Baseball with 449 runs scored entering Monday's action.
One of those offensive catalysts is second baseman Luis Garcia Jr., who is on track to have the best season of his seven-year career. And after a week of pure dominance at the plate, Garcia earned the National League Player of the Week Award for June 22-June 28. It is the very first time that Garcia received the honor.

Garcia, 26, was once a highly regarded prospect in the Nationals' farm system before making his MLB debut in 2020. But outside of a productive 2024 season, the second baseman hasn't lived up to those lofty expectations, especially after struggling in 2025. Nonetheless, Garcia appeared to be returning to his 2024 form to start this season, with a respectable .743 OPS and 10 home runs in his first 72 games.
However, the past week showed a completely different Garcia, who was completely unstoppable at the dish. In 19 at-bats and 22 plate appearances over six games, the infielder tallied 10 hits and slashed an unfathomable .526/.591/1.579 for a mind-boggling 2.170 OPS. Of Garcia's 10 hits, eight of them went for extra bases and six traveled over the fence; the only game he didn't homer in was Friday, when he wasn't in the starting lineup.
After hitting a home run in each of Washington's three games against the Philadelphia Phillies, Garcia racked up seven hits on Saturday and Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles. This included two doubles and three home runs, with a multi-homer game on Sunday to help the Nationals capture a series in Camden Yards.

On the season, Garcia is hitting .279/.307/.543 with 16 home runs (just two short of his career-high), a 131 wRC+ and 1.2 fWAR. He currently ranks fourth in Wins Above Replacement (FanGraphs ) among Nationals position players, behind only Keibert Ruiz (1.4), CJ Abrams (2.5) and James Wood (2.8).
Although Washington is only one game over .500 (43-42) due to a struggling pitching staff, their powerful offense has them just two games back of a Wild Card spot. Garcia's contributions to the team's firepower have become impossible to ignore thanks to his monster week, and if he continues to have a career year, the Nationals may need to consider him as part of their young core of players.
