Nationals Make Concerning James Wood Decision

As the Washington Nationals continue to battle for the final NL Wild Card spot, they will do so without one of their best players for at least the next 10 days.

On Tuesday, ahead of the team's game against the Philadelphia Phillies , the Nationals placed outfielder James Wood on the 10-Day injured list. The official diagnosis is a mild oblique strain, and manager Drew Butera said he is hopeful this will be a minimum stint. If it is, then Wood would be eligible to return to the lineup on August 14th against the New York Mets.

The injury occurred on a swing when Wood grounded out to first base in the top of the seventh inning. He appeared to be in discomfort as he ran to first base and would later be replaced by Dylan Crews in the outfield. Crews himself had a lengthy absence in 2025 with the same injury, so the Nationals are hopeful that Wood has avoided the worst-case scenario.

Wood has spent most of the season as the Nationals' leadoff batter and has been in the discussion for NL MVP. Through 114 games this year, Wood has a dazzling stat line, slashing .265/.393/.535 with 30 home runs, 73 RBI, and 17 stolen bases. Wood also leads MLB with 100 runs scored and 90 walks.

The Nationals have surprised many this season and are still in the hunt for the playoffs, barring a lengthy absence for Wood. Along with shortstop CJ Abrams, Wood has led the Nationals to a 55-59 record, and they enter Tuesday's action 5.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot. But for the Nationals to make a run for the playoffs, they'll need Wood back from the IL as soon as possible.

In a corresponding move, the Nationals recalled Andrew Pinckney from Triple-A Rochester.
