Garrett Crochet has only made one start with the Boston Red Sox, but it was enough to earn him a shiny new six-year, $170 million contract extension, which was officially announced by the team on Tuesday. With that came a full breakdown of the deal, which featured some intriguing new details.

The Red Sox acquired Crochet in a blockbuster trade with the Chicago White Sox over the offseason, giving them the frontline starting pitcher their rotation desperately needed. While it seemed like extension talks between the two sides were set to be tabled until the offseason, they managed to find common ground on Monday night.

"BREAKING: Left-hander Garrett Crochet and the Boston Red Sox are in agreement on a six-year, $170 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. The deal starts in 2026 and includes an opt-out after 2030. By far the largest deal ever for a pitcher with 4+ years of service," Jeff Passan of ESPN reported in a post on X.

There's more to this deal than meets the eye, though. Crochet could opt out in 2030, and Boston could tack on an extra year in 2032. The team option would only come into play if Crochet misses 120 consecutive days in 2026-2031 seasons with a left arm injury, but if that doesn't happen, he could opt out of his deal in 2030.

"Garrett Crochet's 6-year, $170 million contract breakdown:
Signing Bonus: $4 million.
2026: $24M
2027: $28M
2028: $28M
2029: $28M
2030: $28M
2031: $30M
2032: Club Option: $15M if Crochet is on IL for 120 or more consecutive days in 2026-2031 seasons for left arm injury.
2030: Player may opt out if condition for club option is not met by end of 2030 season.
Also, base salaries in 2027-2031 increase based on previous season:
$2M for Cy Young Winner
$1.5M for Cy Young 2nd or 3rd Place
$1M for Cy Young 4th or 5th Place
$500,000 for Cy Young 6th-10th place.
$2M if traded," Bob Nightengale of USA Today shared in a post on X.

Crochet drew the Opening Day start for the Red Sox, giving up five hits and two runs while striking out four over five innings of work. He'll be back on the mound Wednesday when Boston looks to snap a four-game losing streak against the Baltimore Orioles.
