The competition for three downstate casino licenses in New York just took a turn.
A new poll conducted by Tulchin Research reveals that nearly two-thirds of Manhattan voters are in favor of Freedom Plaza, an ambitious civic and cultural project planned for Midtown’s East Side.
In fact, there’s especially high support in Midtown East, where 57% of voters endorse the project. The findings underscore a citywide demand for more affordable housing and expanded public open space, signaling a readiness for transformative urban solutions.
Freedom Plaza, designed by the Soloviev Group and Mohegan, aims to address Manhattan’s pressing needs by offering community spaces, job opportunities, and affordable housing.
The project has garnered widespread approval across various demographics, reflecting its alignment with the local residents’ priorities. Here are some of the standout features:
According to Ben Tulchin, President of Tulchin Research, the poll results demonstrate a significant understanding among Manhattan voters of the importance of bold urban development strategies.
While Freedom Plaza gains momentum, several other projects are in the running for a downstate casino license:
There are at least 7 projects still in the running, including The Avenir and one at Ferry’s Point. Each bring unique visions for the city’s future, and they’re all fiercely competing for the approval that could unlock substantial economic benefits.
Jessica Walker, President of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, has highlighted the benefits of granting a gaming license in Manhattan. This move could create thousands of good jobs and bring in billions of dollars, providing a chance to boost the city’s economy and encourage growth and renewal.
The deadline for applications is at the end of this month, while a final decision on who will get a license is expected in December.
With overwhelming support from voters, labor organizations, and community leaders, Freedom Plaza represents a forward-thinking approach to urban development in Midtown’s East Side. As it vies for a coveted gaming license, its comprehensive benefits and widespread backing position it as a leading contender to meet Manhattan’s housing, economic, and community needs.
