Detroit Tigers veteran starting pitcher Justin Verlander is working his way back from a hip injury. While Verlander’s injury recovery has been slow, he is moving forward. On Wednesday, the right-handed hurler reportedly threw 66 pitches during a live batting practice, according to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic.

“Justin Verlander threw 66 pitches in today’s live BP. He hit 95.3 mph in his fourth up. It seemed like an improvement from his previous session,” Stavenhagen reported.

Verlander, 43, remains without an injury return timeline at the moment. Detroit is closely monitoring the situation. Updates on Verlander’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available.

The Tigers could certainly use the help. They entered the 2026 MLB season with expectations of competing, but the ball club is currently in last place in the American League Central standings with a lackluster 21-34 overall record. Detroit is currently 10.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the division.

There is still time for the Tigers to get back on track this season. Verlander’s return will help once it happens. Additionally, the team is still waiting for Tarik Skubal to return from injury as well.

Detroit’s next game is scheduled for Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Angels in Detroit. The Tigers were defeated 10-6 by the Halos on Tuesday in the first contest of the three-game series.

First pitch for the Angels and Tigers matchup on Wednesday night is scheduled for 6:40 PM EST as Detroit looks to get back into the win column.
