New York Mets Dominate Chicago White Sox In Opening Game
Matt Marton-USA TODAY Sports

The offense of the New York Mets carried them to victory tonight on the road against the Chicago White Sox. NY won 5-1 to take the first game of this three-game set. White Sox Left Fielder Andrew Benintendi got the scoring started with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. The New York Mets offense responded by scoring five unanswered runs to put the game out of reach for Chicago’s sluggish offense.

Center Fielder Harrison Bader grounded into a fielder’s choice for NY’s first run of the game in the top of the second inning. Right Fielder Jesse Winker hit an RBI double in the top of the third and Designated Hitter J.D. Martinez clobbered a two-run home run as well as in the third inning. Third Baseman Mark Vientos added a Sacrifice Fly for good measure in the top of the ninth. Will the New York Mets be able to carry this momentum into tomorrow’s contest?

New York Mets Play A Complete Game

It was not just the Mets bats that had a stellar night in “The Windy City.” The team’s pitching staff was also very strong tonight. Starting Pitcher Tylor Megill had one of his best starts of the season surrendering one earned run over 5.1 innings of work and punching out six. After what has been a rough few months for Megill, this start must have felt good. NY’s bullpen picked up their starting pitcher by throwing 3.2 scoreless innings and striking out six. The New York Mets held their opponent to 2-of-9 with RISP tonight.

Looking Ahead To Tomorrow’s Game

The second game of this series takes place tomorrow night with NY’s Jose Quintana(6-9, 4.36 ERA) going up against Chicago’s Davis Martin(0-2, 2.96 ERA). Quintana is coming off a great start where held a high-powered San Diego Padres offense scoreless over 6.1 innings of work. He will look to build upon that start on Saturday night. Martin is coming off a strong start as well against the Detroit Tigers. He gave up only one earned run over five innings. With both starting pitchers riding high, this could be another game dominated by pitching.

The New York Mets will look for a victory tomorrow night which would guarantee them a series victory as NY tries to inch itself back into the National League Wild Card race. They remain three games back of the third wild card spot as the Atlanta Braves were victorious as well this evening. The New York Mets have been unable to make up ground in the wild card race due to the Atlanta Braves going 10-3 over their last 13 games.
