New York Mets Starting Pitcher Kodai Senga is headed to the IL according to Manager Carlos Mendoza. The star pitcher sustained a hamstring injury in the top of the 6th inning of this afternoon’s game against the Washington Nationals. He hurt himself covering first base on a ground ball to First Baseman Pete Alonso. Senga is having a great season. He is 7-3 with a league-leading 1.47 ERA.
While a solid pitcher, injuries have been an issue for the Japanese phenom during his career. He only made one regular season start in 2024 after suffering a shoulder injury in Spring Training. He returned for the MLB Playoffs and did not fare well. How will the New York Mets fare without Senga in the starting rotation?
Even though New York’s pitching staff has been great in 2025, they have done so without a few key pieces. Starting Pitchers Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea have yet to make their season debuts with the ballclub. New York has gotten great contributions in 2025 from David Peterson and Clay Homes. New York leads the league in ERA by a wide margin. They must rely on their depth to continue succeeding until Senga is healthy enough to return to the mound.
New York stays at home over the weekend as they begin a three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays. New York hopes that Senga can return in a few weeks. When he returns, he needs to be as effective as he was before his stint on the IL.
