The New York Yankees are set to enter the 2025 MLB offseason with a few major needs to focus on. After losing to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS, there are obvious things that need to be improved in order to be a top-tier World Series contender in 2026.
With that being said, there are quite a few ways the Yankees could go about adding the necessary improvements.
One potential need entering the offseason will be finding more offensive firepower. Cody Bellinger could very well be on his way out of town. If that happens, how could New York replace him?
How about a massive free agency splash by signing Chicago Cubs' free agent superstar Kyle Tucker?
R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports took a look at the top 25 free agents on the 2026 MLB market. When it came to Tucker, he named the Yankees as one of the top potential fits.
After pulling off a blockbuster trade to acquire Tucker from the Houston Astros last offseason, the Cubs could very well see Tucker walk after just one year. He played well to begin the 2025 MLB season, but trailed off as the season moved along.
Granted, Tucker did deal with some injury issues throughout the season. But, the overall return for Chicago's investment wasn't great.
In 136 games played, Tucker hit 22 home runs to go along with 73 RBI. He finished the season with a slash line of .266/.377/.464. They weren't horrible numbers, but they did not live up to the standard expected from a superstar like Tucker.
Entering MLB free agency, Tucker has received a contract projection of around 10 years and $401 million. Spotrac was the source of that projection.
Assuming that is the price tag to land Tucker this offseason, New York would have to make a tough decision. Do the Yankees go all-in offensively to sign a player like Tucker? Or, should they focus on retaining Bellinger at a much lesser price and targeting pitching help?
Expect to hear a lot of rumors surrounding New York as the offseason gets underway. Tucker will likely continue to see his name linked to the Yankees.
