Orioles Designate Chadwick Tromp For Assignment

The Orioles have designated catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment, the team announced Friday. Newly acquired catcher Jake Rogers will take his spot on Baltimore’s active and 40-man roster.

Tromp, 31, has bounced back and forth between the Braves and O’s for the past few seasons, serving as a defensive-minded backup in both Baltimore and Atlanta. He’s tallied 51 plate appearances between the two clubs this season and produced just a .163/.160/.184 batting line. He’s a career .208/.215/.344 hitter in 229 big league plate appearances and a .242/.315/.395 hitter in parts of nine Triple-A seasons (spanning 1625 plate appearances).

Tromp’s free-swinging, strikeout-prone approach will always leave something to be desired at the plate. He’s walked only three times in his 229 plate appearances as a major leaguer and fanned at a near-30% clip. He has a bit of pop in his bat when he does make contact, however, and he’s a quality framer with average caught-stealing rates and decent marks for his ability to block balls in the dirt. Both the Baltimore and Atlanta organizations clearly feel he’s a solid third or fourth catcher to have on a depth chart; they’ve both acquired multiple times over the past few seasons and given him a combined 55 games in the majors.

The Orioles can trade Tromp before Monday afternoon’s deadline. Failing that, he’ll be placed on outright waivers within the next five days. In the likely event that he clears waivers — he’s done so five times since Opening Day 2025 — he can either accept an assignment to Triple-A Norfolk or elect free agency (as is the right of all players who’ve previously cleared outright waivers at least once in their careers).
