Orioles Make Significant Adley Rutschman Announcement

The loss of Rutschman is the last thing the Orioles needed right now. During Sunday's game against the Houston Astros, Baltimore's other star catcher, Samuel Basallo, exited after just one at-bat. After the game, the team revealed the 21-year-old is dealing with right shoulder discomfort. The injury is serious enough that Basallo is out of the lineup for today's game against the Red Sox.

Sam Huff will get the start behind the plate today and could see the majority of the playing time if Basallo is forced to miss additional time.

The Orioles finally looked like they were turning their season around after sweeping the Astros to extend their winning streak to seven games. It is Baltimore's longest winning streak since 2023.

Because of that hot streak, the Orioles are firmly back in the playoff race, sitting just two games behind the final American League Wild Card spot. The team they are chasing is the Red Sox, who enter today's matchup riding a 13-game winning streak of their own.

This is the third time this season that Rutschman has landed on the injured list. He missed time in April with left ankle inflammation and again in June after suffering a concussion when he was hit in the head by a throw.

When healthy, Rutschman has been a steady presence near the top of the Orioles' lineup, slashing .251/.331/.433 with eight home runs and a .764 OPS. He was also Baltimore's lone representative at this year's All-Star Game.

Without both of their starting catchers healthy, the Orioles will need their other offensive stars, Gunnar Henderson and Pete Alonso, to step up even more. First pitch between the Orioles and Red Sox is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET in Boston.
