Ozzie Albies debuted with the Atlanta Braves in 2017, and he remains a crucial part of the roster today. The second baseman has spent his entire major league career in Atlanta up to this point, becoming a three-time All-Star, a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and a World Series Champion with the team. However, his time with the Braves could be coming to an end.
The Braves signed Albies to a seven-year, $35 million extension back in 2019. However, his contract included $7 million club options for 2026 and 2027, which means the Braves will have to make a decision on the 28-year-old soon.
Ahead of the offseason, Albies sent a message and gave some insight about what his goals for the future are.
It remains to see what the Braves' plan is, but according to Albies himself, he is hoping to stay with the team for at least one more season.
Recently, Albies made it clear that he wants to stay in Atlanta, calling it "the dream." Ultimately, it will be the Braves' decision, but if the Curacao native gets his way, he will stick around for the foreseeable future (h/t Gabriel Burns of AJC).
“Oh, 100% (I hope to stay moving forward),” Albies said. “That’s definitely the dream.”
Albies has long been a solid player for the Braves, but it is fair to say the best season of his career up to this point was in 2023. Though Atlanta lost in the NLDS to the Philadelphia Phillies, they still had a fantastic season that year, largely due to Albies.
That season, he batted .280 at the plate and recorded 33 home runs and 109 RBIs. All of these numbers are still career-highs for the nine-year vet, who also finished 16th in NL MVP voting that season.
Albies has not had a better season than his 2023 campaign to date, and it is fair to wonder if he ever will. This season, he is hitting just .231 with an OPS of .644, both of which are career lows for him. Regardless, Albies is still a solid player for the Braves, and he has already made it clear that he wants to be there.
With the Braves most likely missing the postseason this year, they will have a lot of decisions to make in the offseason. However, it remains to be seen what Atlanta has in store, including whether they will bring Albies back or not, as they look to bounce back next season.
