San Diego Padres first baseman Luis Arraez was stretchered off the field Sunday following a frightening injury during a game against the Houston Astros.

Arraez collided with Astros second baseman Mauricio Dubon while trying to beat out a drag bunt during the first inning of Sunday’s game at Daikin Park in Houston, Tx. Arraez was going full speed when his head collided with Dubon’s shoulder, sending both of them to the ground.

Arraez unquestionably got the worst of the collision. He laid motionless on the field for several minutes as trainers tended to him.

Arraez was eventually placed on a stretcher and carted off the field. As he departed, he was able to flash a thumbs-up sign to the crowd.

The Padres announced that Arraez was transported to Houston Methodist Hospital to be further evaluated. He was “stable, conscious, responsive, and able to move his extremities.”

Though the initial update was positive, Arraez’s injury was one of the scarier ones you will see in Major League Baseball. Hopefully he is able to make a quick and full recovery.

The 28-year-old Arraez is in his second season with the Padres after being dealt to San Diego early last season. He is a three-time batting champion, and entered play Sunday with a .287 average in 21 games.
