The San Diego Padres (79-66) are looking to push for a postseason berth entering Wednesday but are doing so without both of the team’s starting shortstops.
Xander Bogaerts has been sidelined since August 27 after suffering a left foot fracture and backup Jose Iglesias is listed as day-to-day and unavailable for Wednesday’s series finale against the Cincinnati Reds.
Although Iglesias has not had a productive year for San Diego, the organization’s depth up the middle has now been depleted in such a crucial stretch and Jake Cronenworth has slid over to shortstop, making just his second start at the position since 2022.
Fortunately, the Padres did receive good news on Bogaerts Wednesday when it was revealed that he would begin baseball activities, one day after getting rid of his walking boot. Padres manager Mike Shildt spoke with reporters pregame and addressed the update.
“There’s been enough healing. He feels good. He’s recovering well. Today he threw, did some side-to-side work, and starting to hit. He has started the baseball progression and we’ll see if it gets interrupted or if it continues to gain momentum,” Shildt said.

This is an exciting development for San Diego as Bogaerts was beginning to produce three years into his 11-year, $280 million contract. Over 37 games in the second half, the 32-year-old veteran had begun to hit the ball harder and already matched his home run total from the first half (5) in less than half the games.
If San Diego intends on making a deep run to the postseason, Bogaerts will need to be healthy with everyone getting shifted around in his absence. His injury has forced Iglesias into the lineup, creating a clear hole as his age and declining production have started to show.
The Padres will monitor Bogaerts day-to-day in the hopes that he can help the franchise win its first World Series title ever.
