The San Diego Padres are heading into the 2026 MLB season looking to extend the team’s current contending window.
Expectations have cooled as San Diego’s payroll flexibility has been limited this offseason compared to recent years. Because of this, the Padres will lean on the established core to continue producing, and that includes third basemanManny Machado.
The 33-year-old veteran is preparing for his eighth season in San Diego, still chasing the city’s first World Series title. The Padres have qualified for the playoffs in three of the past four seasons, advancing to the NLCS in 2022. Last year, San Diego finished 90-72 in the regular season and dropped a wild-card series to the Chicago Cubs.
Machado continued to provide value in 2025, posting a .275 batting average, .335 on-base percentage, .795 OPS, 27 home runs, 14 stolen bases and 95 RBIs across 159 games.
He remained a defensive anchor at the hot corner, and at season’s end he was recognized with his seventh career All-Star selection and third Silver Slugger award.
As Machado prepares for another year this offseason, he has once again been recognized among the game’s elite. Each year, MLB Network announces its Top 100 Players Right Now list, and Machado has consistently earned a place.
This year was no different, as he landed at No. 34. While that marks a slight drop from his previous ranking of No. 29, it still reflects his standing as one of the league’s most consistent superstars.
The Padres reacted to the announcement on X, sending their captain a message. “Sky’s The Limit,” the team wrote on Tuesday.

That recognition serves as another reminder of Machado’s enduring presence in the game, setting the stage to reflect on his career accomplishments and the impact he has made both in San Diego and across MLB.
His journey began with the Baltimore Orioles, where he made his big-league debut in 2012 and quickly established himself as one of the brightest young talents in the sport.
Machado was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018, where he spent half a season before entering free agency.
Machado signed a landmark 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres in free agency, a deal that at the time was one of the largest in MLB history.
He initially planned to exercise his opt-out clause in 2023, but San Diego made sure their superstar stayed put, extending him with an 11-year, $350 million contract in February of that year.
Now in the later stages of his career, Machado has embraced the responsibility of being a veteran presence in the clubhouse. He has become a guiding voice for younger players, setting the tone with his work ethic, consistency and ability to perform in high-pressure moments.
While his bat and glove remain central to the Padres’ success, his leadership has grown just as important, helping shape the culture of a team still chasing its first World Series title.
