San Diego Padres superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. was involved in a minor crash involving a motorcycle in his native Dominican Republic over the weekend, but fortunately it is believed he walked away from the accident mostly unscathed.

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, word of Tatis’ accident first came courtesy of Baudilio Jiménez, a sports reporter from Santo Domingo.

The crash occurred on a highway in Higüey. While a motorcycle was involved in the incident, it’s unclear whether Tatis was operating it or in another vehicle at the time of the crash.

Jiménez added that Tatis, 22, was transported to a “medical center” following the crash and treated for minor scrapes.

“People familiar with Tatis’ status said he was doing normal activities as of Tuesday,” Acee reported.

A first-time All-Star in 2021, Tatis finished third in voting for the NL Most Valuable Player Award this season. The shortstop posted a .282/.364/.611 slash line to go along with an NL-leading 42 home runs, 97 RBI and 25 stolen bases across 130 games. The 2021 campaign marked the first season of Tatis’ 14-year, $340 million contract.

Complicating matters as it pertains to any subsequent reporting or clarification concerning Tatis’ status or the nature of any potential injuries is how the Padres — and Major League Baseball as well — are prohibited from commenting on the superstar or any other player due to league-mandated protocols related to the ongoing MLB lockout.
