Pat Murphy insisted that Brandon Sproat will remain part of the Milwaukee Brewers starting rotation despite another difficult outing in the team’s 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Murphy backed the young right-hander and dismissed suggestions that Milwaukee was considering removing him from the rotation following Sunday’s defeat. According to Brewers Beat reporter Curt Hogg, Murphy said Sproat has shown too much potential to give up on him after only a few rough starts.
The manager added that Sproat still possesses the talent to develop into a high-end starter. The loss completed a frustrating series for Milwaukee, which dropped two of three games against the defending World Series champions.
The Brewers were outscored 16-4 across the final two games of the series after opening with a victory earlier in the week. Sproat struggled to contain the Dodgers lineup on Sunday.
Pat Murphy reaffirmed the Brewers commitment to keeping Brandon Sproat in the rotation moving forward.

“He’s so good when he’s good. In no way, shape or form I think are considering getting him out of there. Conversely…this guy’s got a chance to be a high-end starter.”
The rookie right-hander lasted just over four innings, allowing three earned runs while battling command issues throughout the afternoon. He walked four batters, hit another, and uncorked a wild pitch before exiting the game.
Despite the difficult outing, Murphy chose to focus more on the flashes of talent Sproat has shown this season rather than the mistakes he made against one of baseball’s most dangerous offenses.
Sproat entered Sunday’s outing with a 5.75 ERA this season. While the numbers are not where Milwaukee hopes they will be, Murphy still believes the 25-year-old can become an important long-term piece of the rotation.
The Brewers have relied heavily on young pitching this year, and that approach has helped the club remain competitive in the National League Central despite injuries and roster changes. However, the margin for error against Los Angeles was small.
Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto, delivered seven strong innings and limited Milwaukee’s offense to just one run. The Brewers collected seven hits, but all were singles, and the lineup failed to deliver in key scoring situations.
The Dodgers broke the game open in the fifth inning when Kyle Tucker ripped a two-run triple before Andy Pages followed with a two-run homer. That rally ended Sproat’s afternoon and gave Los Angeles full control.
Milwaukee’s offense also continues to rely on several young stars. Outfielder Jackson Chourio has remained one of the team’s most productive hitters this season.
Chourio entered the Dodgers series batting .284 with one home run and five RBI this season. Catcher William Contreras has also continued to serve as a major contributor in the middle of the lineup.
The Brewers remain hopeful that Sproat can continue developing into a reliable starter rather than being judged solely on early struggles against elite opponents like the Dodgers.
