The Los Angeles Angels have crashed to a halt after a strong start to the 2025 season. They won seven of their first 10 games, providing some hope that general manager Perry Minasian may have done enough to lift the Angels out of their league-longest streak of consecutive losing seasons (9) and seasons without a playoff appearance (10).
But, since then, they are an abysmal 6-17, bringing them to a 13-20 record prior to Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. They have lost eight of their last nine games, including four straight losses of six or more runs. They haven’t been hitting or pitching well, and the season is dangerously close to being lost before it really ever began.
Minasian discussed the recent hardships and what he thinks the root of the issue might be on the field, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com:
“I think teams go through stretches. Teams go through stretches where they don’t swing the bat well. You’re gonna have some numbers that aren’t flashy, right? You can pick a six-game stretch, 10-game stretch from anybody and point to certain times where they’re really struggling, and offensively they haven’t scored. When you don’t score, that usually means you’re not getting on base, and we haven’t gotten on base, and we’ve struck out. But with that being said, we had some productive games early in the season where we swung the bat pretty good. So I’m hoping we can revert back. I’m expecting to revert back to some of the things we did earlier in the year, where we made more productive outs, better at-bats. These guys know that. I mean, the work has been good, the coaching has been good. It’s just execution, right?”
When asked point blank if he feels the Angels can be competitive this season, Minasian did not provide much confidence with his response.
“We take it day by day. We’ll try to win today’s game. We’ll play 162 and see where we’re at in the end.”
All signs are pointing to another dismal season for L.A. If they are going to turn it around, they need to do so quickly, starting with the bats. They have not scored more than five runs in a game since April 6 and have done so a total of three times this season.
And with the farm system and finances being what they are, it would be surprising to see Minasian add more bats to the lineup.
Trout suffered a bone bruise in his surgically-repaired left knee at the beginning of the month and was placed on the injured list. For now, there are no new updates, but there are still some days to go before reaching the 10-day minimum.
