First baseman Pete Alonso has been incredible throughout his MLB career for the New York Mets. In seven years, Alonso has a .253 batting average, an .857 OPS with 264 home runs and 712 RBIs. His home run total is the most in Mets history. These stats have led to five All-Star appearances.
He earned his first Silver Slugger Award in 2025, as he batted .272, got on base at a .347 clip, hit 38 long balls and drove in 126 runs for New York. This past season was also his second straight in which he has played in all 162 games.
Before the 2025 season began, Alonso tested the free agent market, but ended up re-signing with the Mets on a two-year, $54 million deal that included a player option for the second year.
After New York's season ended without making the playoffs, Alonso announced that he was opting out of the second year of his contract, meaning he is a free agent for the second straight winter.
On Tuesday, ESPN reporter Jeff Passan gave an update on where things stand for Alonso, along with possible suitors for the 30-year-old.
"Alonso's willingness to play designated hitter offers the sorts of avenues a first-base-only mindset wouldn't," Passan said. "He could stay with the Mets, move up to Boston, bring Cincinnati the big bat it desperately needs or, if Ryan Mountcastle is traded or nontendered, split the first-base and DH jobs in Baltimore with rookie Samuel Basallo, who will also spend plenty of time at catcher."
Mets fans are hoping that Alonso stays with the organization that drafted him, although a move to another team could be a good fit for the slugger.
The Red Sox didn't have one player start more than 68 games at first base in 2025, while the Reds had Spencer Steer play his third straight year as the team's starter. However, with his production, which doesn't come close to Alonso's, an upgrade at the corner infield position would be great for Cincinnati.
While nothing is certain for Alonso yet, there is no doubt he will be signing a very lucrative contract before the 2026 season.
