Phillies accomplish rare feat in doubleheader sweep of Giants

The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the biggest disappointments in the early going of the 2026 MLB season, but Thursday's doubleheader sweep of the San Francisco Giants offered some encouragement.

The Phillies (12-19) won Game 1 of the doubleheader, 3-2, before following that up with a 6-5 win in 10 innings. Rookie Justin Crawford played the hero in the first game, while Alec Bohm helped Philadelphia pull off the sweep in the nightcap.

Both wins came via walk-offs, making the Phillies the first team since 2004 to win both games of a doubleheader in such fashion. The Phillies have now won each of their three games under interim manager Don Mattingly, who took over after Rob Thomson was fired on Tuesday.

Phillies walk off Giants in doubleheader sweep

In a game where left fielder Kyle Schwarber crushed his 350th career homer and maintained his current pace with Hall of Famer Babe Ruth, the rookie Crawford played the hero late.

Bryson Stott's RBI triple in the ninth made it a 2-2 game before Edmundo Sosa grounded out to second on the next at-bat. With the Phillies down to their final out, the rookie Crawford delivered the game-winning RBI single. That was Philadelphia's second walk-off win of the season at the time, both of which came from Crawford.

According to MLB.com's Sarah Langs, Crawford joins Hall of Famer Scott Rolen as the only players in franchise history with multiple walk-off RBI at age 22 or younger in the last 50 years.

The second game of the doubleheader brought much of the same heroics after the Phillies gave up the go-ahead RBI single to Giants (13-18) right fielder Jung Hoo Lee in the top of the ninth.

Down to their last strike and facing a full count, Schwarber came through with an RBI double to tie the game back up.

Moments later in the bottom of the 10th, Bohm's sacrifice fly to center field was all the Phillies needed walk the Giants off for the second time on Thursday.

It is the first time since 1998 that the Phillies won both games of a doubleheader via a walk-off. They are the first team to do so since the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2004.

Reliever Chase Shugart was credited with the win in both games, striking out Giants third baseman Matt Chapman in just four pitches in Game 1 before allowing one hit and recording another strikeout of Chapman after coming in for the 10th inning in Game 2.

Prior to winning their last three over the Giants, the Phillies had lost 11 of their last 12 games. They have simply not been good in all phases this season, ranking 27th in batting average (.227) and ERA (4.84). They are tied for the 15th-most home runs (33), but that is still nowhere near what you would expect from a team coming off a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS.

The Phillies still have a lot of work to do to climb out of an early hole and make up a 9.5-game deficit to the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves (22-10). Thursday's doubleheader sweep, though, shows what they are capable of, even if it took some late heroics to even have a chance in both games.
