Phillies Add Former Red Sox Pitcher
Michael McLoone-USA TODAY Sports

There's been heavy speculation by those around the league that the Philadelphia Phillies aren't done adding and are waiting to strike on the open market.

If that's the case, they're going to have to do something soon as Spring Training is right around the corner.

Late offseason trades are always on the table as well, and the Phillies reportedly have been eyeing Kenley Jansen who's coming off an All-Star season with the Boston Red Sox.

However, Philadelphia added a former Red Sox pitcher to their roster after they announced they claimed Kaleb Ort off waivers.

The 32-year-old made his Major League debut with Boston in 2021, only appearing in one game that season. He continued to split time with their Triple-A affiliate and MLB roster, pitching in 25 games during 2022 and 21 last year.

Ort struggled mightily, posting an ERA of 6.31 across these appearances, giving up 62 hits, 10 home runs and 24 walks over 51 1/3 innings pitched.

Eventually, he was placed on the 15-day injured list in 2023 before being transferred to the 60-day IL with elbow inflammation.

He was subsequently outrighted to waivers in October where he was claimed by the Seattle Mariners. The Miami Marlins then claimed Ort after he was placed on waivers again, before they decided to designate him for assignment where the Phillies pounced.

It's unclear if he will play a role with this team, but he's another arm that is in their Triple-A system who can be called upon if necessary.

To make room for this move, it was also announced that Philadelphia designated infielder Diego Castillo for assignment, who they just claimed over a week ago.
