After a 4–3 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to build momentum with another victory in the series. As they prepare for the next matchup, however, questions remain about the starting lineup. Right-hand pitcher Andrew Painter will be sidelined due to a migraine, creating a notable absence in the rotation (h/t Phillies X account).

In his place, the Phillies are expected to turn to right-hander Zach Pop. Painter has been impressive early on, including a standout performance on March 31 in which he recorded eight strikeouts over 5.1 innings. That outing highlighted his ability to carry over his success from the minor leagues and compete effectively at the major league level this season.

With Painter sidelined by a minor issue, attention shifts to how Pop will handle an expanded role. There is some uncertainty, given his limited workload this season. Pop has appeared in six games, posting a 3.38 ERA and a 0.938 WHIP with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings.

Those numbers contrast with his 2024 season with the Toronto Blue Jays, when he pitched in 58 games and recorded a 5.59 ERA, a 1.324 WHIP, and 33 strikeouts across 48.1 innings. His ability to adjust quickly will be key for Philadelphia moving forward.

Painter’s absence is a setback for Philadelphia, especially after a strong spring. He made four appearances, compiling a 2.31 ERA and a 0.771 WHIP with eight strikeouts in 11.2 innings. His high-spin slider, improving changeup, and repeatable delivery have made him an effective strikeout pitcher, highlighting the value he brings to the rotation.

Painter is working to establish himself as one of the league’s top young pitchers. The Phillies selected him 13th overall in the 2021 MLB Draft out of Calvary Christian Academy in Florida. With his 6-foot-7 frame and a fastball that reaches the upper 90s, he quickly emerged as one of the top pitching prospects in his class.

His development was briefly halted when he underwent Tommy John surgery and ulnar nerve transposition on July 25, 2023, to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow. Now healthy, Painter made his MLB debut during the 2026 season.

He signed a one-year, $820,000 pre-arbitration contract with Philadelphia and remains under team control through 2031. Painter also received a $3.1 million signing bonus in 2021, reflecting the organization’s long-term investment in his potential.
