Phillies Facing Kyle Schwarber Decision After Bryce Harper News

While the Phillies were preparing for Sunday Night Baseball against the New York Yankees, Schwarber was out taking reps at first base, a position he has played just twice all season long as he primarily operates as the designated hitter while Harper handles first base.

When asked if Schwarber could potentially get back to playing first base more regularly, interim manager Don Mattingly confirmed that is a decision the Phillies are considering.

However, the reason behind it was troubling. Mattingly said that Schwarber and Harper's busy month of July has affected both of them physically, and he is trying to help Harper by placing Schwarber at first base occasionally to give him days off his feet, per Ty Daubert of Phillies Nation.

While Schwarber may be slowing down physically, Harper is the one showing it in the batter's box. He has really struggled in July, and if getting Schwarber out to first base once a week can give Harper the occasional rest he needs to stay sharp, that is a smart move by Mattingly.

Corner infielder Alec Bohm is also an option if either Schwarber or Harper needs a full day off entirely.

With the Phillies still chasing the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East, keeping both of their franchise superstars as fresh and productive as possible heading into August and September is a clear priority.
