Phillies Facing Nick Castellanos Trade Decision

The Philadelphia Phillies are entering an offseason full of change after another early postseason exit. The Phillies dropped the NLDS against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in four games.

As Philadelphia regroups, the future of the outfield remains uncertain, with Harrison Bader and Max Kepler set to hit unrestricted free agency. However, the future of Nick Castellanos with the team will also remain a question after losing his starting job in 2025. Castellanos has spent the last four seasons of his career with the Phillies and peaked in 2023 with an All-Star appearance.

Since then, the 33-year-old veteran has begun to struggle at the plate, owning a .250 batting average, .294 on-base percentage and .694 OPS through 147 games. Castellanos’ bat remains below average, but his defensive struggles significantly hurt his overall value, as he ranks among the worst defenders in the league.

As Philadelphia enters the offseason, the team has been hesitant to commit to Castellanos as an everyday player. During the end-of-season press conference, when asked about Castellanos’ future, team president Dave Dombrowski replied, “We’ll see what happens.”

Castellanos will be entering the final year of his five-year, $100 million contract signed ahead of the 2022 season. With his production slipping and defensive struggles continuing, Philadelphia is facing a trade decision on whether to move him before the deal expires.

If the Phillies decide to move on, the team likely would not recoup any valuable assets and the move would be a salary dump. With Castellanos entering his age-34 season and production already slipping, the Phillies may improve with a different player in the outfield. Castellanos has been a huge part of the Phillies during his tenure and he meant a lot to the city over the past four years.

He was a consistent presence in the lineup, contributed in multiple postseason runs and built strong relationships within the clubhouse. Over that span, he appeared in 602 games and totaled 599 hits, 82 home runs and 326 RBIs. Even if the team moves on, his impact on the organization will not be forgotten.
