The Philadelphia Phillies have multiple starting pitchers locked up for the future, but Ranger Suarez is set to be a free agent after 2025. He's in the middle of another great year and will likely hit the open market.
Retaining him will likely be challenging, but according to Ruben Amaro Jr. on The Phillies Show, Suarez might not have the suitors most expect in the offseason.
"I also think a lot of teams are going to shy away from the velocity," Amaro said. "He may lose 10, to 12, to 15 teams based on that."
“He doesn’t have the velocity.”

This update from Amaro is interesting, considering Suarez currently has a 2.00 ERA in his 11 starts this season.
While his velocity isn't the same as other top pitchers in baseball, he's proven it hasn't mattered. His past few seasons have been remarkable, and he was an All-Star and one of the Cy Young favorites a year ago before suffering a back injury.
If teams take Suarez off their board due to his velocity, it could be good news for the Phillies. With less competition, the Phillies might have more of a chance to keep Suarez.
After missing all of April, Suarez allowed seven earned runs in his first start back from injury. But, since then, Suarez has a 1.19 ERA and 61 strikeouts to 15 walks across ten starts.
He's been one of the best pitchers in baseball since his first start of the year in early May. While teams may balk at his fastball velocity, passing on him in free agency would be odd.
For the Phillies, it'd be a welcome one, as it'd increase their chances of bringing Suarez back. The 29-year-old lefty has been one of baseball's best pitchers over the last two years.
Keeping Suarez in Philadelphia would be ideal, as they'd keep their dominant rotation together for another year.
