With Bryce Harper on the injured list and a roster needing upgrades, the Philadelphia Phillies are approaching a make-or-break point in the season.
Sitting just inside the NL Wild Card at 38-29 as we draw closer to the season's midpoint, this team will have to find ways to stay afloat if they want to be buyers at the MLB trade deadline.
If they ultimately decide to sell, The Athletic's Jim Bowden believes Phillies' third baseman Alec Bohm could be on the trading block.
So far this season, Bohm has posted a .280 batting average, 24 RBIs, and five home runs. The 28-year-old is hitting right about on par for his previous three years in the majors.
As a former No. 3 overall pick by the Phillies in the MLB Draft back in 2018, Bohm has established himself as a reliable and consistent role player. He has also posted just two errors this year after racking up 15 last season.
According to Bowden, this makes Bohm an intriguing trade candidate for a team like the Detroit Tigers, who are the top team in baseball but may be looking to fill a hole in their squad at third base.
Normally, the Tigers would have Matt Vierling as a primary option, platooning with guys like Zach McKinstry and (this year) Javier Baez. But Vierling has barely played this season while battling injuries, and McKinstry and Baez are not full-time third basemen.
As a team that has been described as having several holes, the Phillies have to make a decision come the trade deadline.
Buy or sell.
