If the Philadelphia Phillies want to maximize their lineup during the offseason, it could require them to go after a first baseman. With Bryce Harper being on record saying that he's willing to play the outfield if the Phillies add a competent first baseman, there's no reason for the team not to be interested in New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso.
Alonso is one of the better hitters in Major League Baseball and is having another excellent season.
With 243 home runs throughout his 3,394 big league at-bats in seven seasons, he's hit home runs more than nearly any other player in the history of the game. He's continued that this year, blasting 17 with 63 RBIs, which leads the National League.
For all those reasons and more, Dylan Sanders believes that the Phillies need to be interested in him, adding that he's one of four free agents the Phillies should take a look at in the offseason.
“Alonso ended up going back to the New York Mets this past offseason, but will likely be headed back to free agency in search of a long-term contract with an opt-out available after this year.
“He has posted a .302/.399/.592 slash line with 17 home runs and 63 RBI. He surprisingly leads the NL with 21 doubles as well... Bryce Harper has been willing to move back to the outfield, which would need to be the case with Alonso,” he wrote.
If Harper is still willing to move back to the outfield during next offseason, this seems like a deal that makes too much sense to try.
Alonso will be expensive, as he has an opt-out in the 2026 offseason, which he’s expected to take, but he's well worth the money.
