Phillies Make Alec Bohm Decision After Luis Arraez Trade

Alec Bohm has struggled this year, batting .226 with a .284 on-base percentage and a .363 slugging percentage, with 13 home runs and 60 RBIs in 107 games this season. Bohm has spent most of his time at third base, but after a new trade acquisition, his position is about to change, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki.

Bohm, a first-round pick out of Wichita State in 2018, has spent his six-plus seasons in Philadelphia entirely at third base, making the 2024 All-Star team and helping the Phillies reach the playoffs each of the past three years. He is now set to move over to first base, opening the hot corner for another position change.

Bryce Harper brought his outfielder's glove on the last road trip, saying he was ready to move to the outfield, if needed.

The Phillies, at 59-53 and trailing the Braves by eight games in the National League East, acquired three-time batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants ahead of Monday's trade deadline. Arraez is expected to man second base, which pushes Bryson Stott to third and, in turn, Bohm across the diamond to first.

After the reports that Bryce Harper may move back to the outfield depending on the trade deadline, the 33-year-old brought his outfielders' glove on the Phillies' last road trip just in case and will now take over in right field. It will be his first time moving over to right since 2021.

The Phillies were in desperate need of a contact bat that can get base runners for the power-heavy lineup starring Kyle Schwarber and Harper, and Arraez fixes that with a current NL-leading .324 batting average this season.

Where Bohm lands could still change, as The Athletic's Matt Gelb reported that the Phillies are also weighing a scenario where Harper stays at first base, with Bohm possibly being traded away before Monday's 6:00 p.m. EST deadline. For now, though, the plan is to keep him in Philadelphia and slide him across the diamond as the Phillies push for a return trip to the postseason.
