Phillies’ Trea Turner Predicted to Hit Career Milestone

Philadelphia Phillies star shortstop Trea Turner has long been touted for his combination of 25+ home run power, 40+ stolen base speed, and high batting averages. In the Phillies’ lineup, his valuable contributions are often overshadowed by Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, who normally steal the headlines.

However, one analyst expects him to retake the spotlight this season. Eric Karabell of ESPN recently predicted Turner would steal a career-high 50 bases.

“Turner, 31, stole his 19th base of the season on Wednesday, in his 66th game," Karabell wrote. "Last season, truncated by a hamstring injury that cost him six weeks, Turner stole 19 bases in 121 games. It tends to be true that speedsters lose speed as they hit their 30s, but Turner remains fully capable. In fact, he is on pace for 46 steals, which would tie his career best, set in 2017 with the Washington Nationals … The Bryce Harper (wrist) injury seems to have ignited Turner's aggressiveness a bit, as he has swiped five bases over 10 June games. Challenged by manager Rob Thomson to reach base more, cause more havoc once he's there and score tons of runs, Turner is thriving.”

Turner’s 43 stolen bases in 2016 marked the last time he eclipsed 40. In his last full season (2023), Turner stole 30 bags. But despite his age, Turner still maintains the fifth fastest sprint speed in the game at 29.9 ft/sec. Compare that to Shohei Ohtani, who is clocked at 28.

However, it’s only fair to note that Ohtani reaches base far more frequently than Turner, though Turner’s OBP has risen to its highest level since 2021. If given enough opportunities, it is entirely possible that Turner reaches 50 stolen bases.
