Pirates Make a Decision on Joey Bart

The Pittsburgh Pirates appear close to getting one of their catchers back from the injured list.

Ahead of their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that catcher Joey Bart will commence a rehab assignment with Single-A Bradenton tonight. Fellow catcher Henry Davis is being placed on the paternity list, with Rafael Flores being activated from the taxi squad to take Davis' place on the roster.

This is certainly an encouraging sign for the Pirates, as the backstop has been on the IL for nearly a month due to a left foot infection. Given that Bart's absence has been long-term, he could remain on a rehab assignment throughout the rest of the Pirates' homestand this week and potentially join them on their road trip.

Bart has been with the Pirates since April 2024 when the San Francisco Giants traded the former first-round pick after a disappointing stint in the Bay Area.

In 21 games this season, the 29-year-old is slashing .259/.290/.379 with two home runs, six RBI and an OPS of .669.

As for Davis, he has had an up-and-down career after being drafted by Pittsburgh with the first overall pick in 2021. He is batting just .138 in 45 games this season with five homers, 17 RBI and a .526 OPS.

The Pirates are playing the middle game of their three-game series tonight against the aforementioned Dodgers and are looking to bounce back after falling 12-3 last night.

Pittsburgh has also lost its last four games and is just a game over .500 at 34-33. They enter tonight in third place in the National League Central. The Pirates are a half-game out of the third and final Wild Card spot in the NL.

The Pirates are hoping to end their 11-year postseason drought.
